100 Days to Composting in Mission, BC

MISSION, BRITISH COLUMBIA—Turn-key composting facility, including a MegaDome® building completed within 100 days

The District of Mission, a rural community of about 40,000 residents, situated on the north bank of the Fraser River in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia had been composting food-wastes under rather primitive conditions—and it was time to replace it with a new facility that could process the current 5,000 tonnes annually, and expand it as required. To minimize interruptions of operations the new facility needed to be designed and build quickly.

BuildWorks Construction Inc. successfully responded to Mission’s RFP process with a comprehensive turn-key proposal, which included a 10,000 SF MegaDome® pre-engineered fabric covered building—designed for top performance in corrosive environments; a rain-water collection system with 10,000 gallon storage tanks, and the company’s patented AirFloor® compost aeration and leachate collection system. An overhead sprinkler system was also included to provide water to the compost when required, and for fire-suppression.

The new Minnie’s Pit compost facility was designed permitted and constructed in just 100 days in late 2014 and has been fully operational since that time.
